The Canadian Coast Guard Environmental Response team is on site of an oil spill in Lewisporte harbour. The incident happened yesterday.
DFO says the source of the oil is the MV Northern Ranger but that the quantity is unknown at this time.
The MV Northern Ranger, operated by Nunatsiavut Marine, was a passenger vessel used on the Labrador Coast. It is now owned by the provincial government.
The spill occurred when a waste oil tank was overfilled and spilled over the side of the boat.
The Coast Guard dispatched its inshore rescue boat from Notre Dame Bay to deploy a containment boom around the vessel. The spill took place near the government wharf.
VOCM News is following the story and will have more updates when they become available.
