An investigation is underway after a serious near-miss on the Hibernia Platform on Sunday.
The C-NLOPB say the incident happened while a drill pipe was being lowered by a crane into storage.
The pipe, which weighed over 500 lbs, came loose and fell over three metres, coming to rest on the dunnage—which is used to hold cargo in place.
There were no injuries, and no personnel in the area as per protocol for gantry crane operations, but it was a serious enough incident that had someone been in the area at the time, it could have proven fatal.
Crane operations were immediately halted and the area secured.
The crane has been taken out of service.
The C-NLOPB is monitoring the Hibernia Management and Development Centre’s investigation of the incident.
