The process has begun to remove 55 barrels from the Humber Canal that have been there since at least the 1950s. The barrels were first discovered back in 2017.
The first barrels were removed by divers yesterday.
During the removal process the barrels are being placed in containment drums to ensure nothing inside escapes into the water.
As well, an alternate water supply has been installed by Stantec to make sure the drinking water for the town of Deer Lake is not affected.
The process continues today.
