A story from VOCM News is making waves at Oxford University.
Last week, VOCM first reported that local historian Ainsley Hawthorn, had made significant discoveriesregarding the origins of the term “belly dance,” tracing it back as far as 1864.
Hawthorn says the term, which carries some controversy, is loosely used to make reference to dances from or inspired by middle eastern dancing, but no one in those countries originally referred to it that way.
Readers of the story on VOCM.com included the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary, who have since contacted Hawthorn about her research to ask her to help re-write the definition of belly dance for the next edition of the dictionary.
