A St. John’s church is the first on the island to gain affirmation status.
Gower Street United Church held a celebratory service last night to mark the status, one that recognizes the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.
The church affirms it will work to promote awareness, give support and work to end discrimination.
Member of the Gower Affirm Committee Larry Kelly, says the church is a safe space and welcomes all.
He says it’s important that once you enter the church you don’t need to park your sexuality at the door.
Kelly says he knows other congregations are working towards becoming an affirmed ministry. Part of the church’s mission is to help others reach that goal.
