A Canadian veteran who traveled to France from Newfoundland to take part in the 75th anniversary D-Day commemorations has made a rare connection while over there.
Rod Deon, is in his late 90s. The Toronto native has been living in St. John’s for a number of years to be close to his daughter Jenn and her family.
The decorated WWII veteran was one of a handful of vets who traveled to France to be part of the ceremonies surrounding the anniversary of D-Day.

Jenn Deon tweeted out a picture this morning of her father shaking hands with a fellow Canadian veteran who served on the same vessel—HMCS Ottawa—75 years ago.
Deon excitedly remarked on the odds of that happening so many years after the fact.
