A retired NHL player from this province credits his grandfather for his career in team sports.
Terry Ryan’s grandfather, Bill ‘Bucky’ Norris, served on the HMS Bulldog in World War Two.
The Bulldog was a B-Class destroyer and is credited with capturing the German Enigma machine and codebooks from the submarine U-110 in 1941.
It was a turning point for the allied forces and credited with ending the war much quicker. There was even a hollywood movie made based on the event, U-571.
Norris lost his right arm in the war but that didn’t stop him from building the family home in Mount Pearl and playing catch with his grandson, Terry.
Norris started the legion in Mount Pearl and he would spend his time there hanging out with all his friends. Ryan believes that’s why he gravitated towards team sports.
Ryan credits his grandfather and the other veterans like him, for giving him the opportunity to live the life he does.
