Eastern Health has confirmed an issue at its Kidney Care Centre in Mount Pearl that has temporarily closed six kidney dialysis units just one year after opening.

The Kidney Care Centre opened in the Mount Pearl Square to much fanfare one year ago.

The health authority says a leak was discovered in the area of some dialysis stations, leading to the discovery of mould.

The affected area was contained and all mould was removed while air quality monitoring continues.

Eastern Health says an engineering assessment is underway to determine the cause of the leak and to provide recommendations to prevent it from happening again.

The health authority is working with patients one-on-one to reschedule affected appointments.
