A local Trans rights activist says they’re not surprised by the Vatican’s new document, issued during Pride Week, that rejects the idea that people can choose or change their gender.

“Male and Female He Created Them” is intended to help Catholic teachers, parents, students and clergy address what it calls the “educational crisis” in teaching sexuality.

Gemma Hickey has been open about documenting their own transformation and serves as an example to others who are struggling to find a way forward.

Gemma says they’re not surprised by the document, but they are frustrated that it was released during Pride Month.

Gemma says the message is clear. It’s a sign that the church is not changing, and it’s most difficult for LBGT Catholics who are still committed to their faith.

Gemma says their heart also goes out to gay clergy.
