The House of Assembly is reopening today with a very different configuration of chairs on the floor.

It’s the first sitting since the provincial election. The incumbent Liberals were returned to power as a minority government with just 20 seats. The PC’s have 15, the NDP has two – pending the results of a judicial recount – and there are two independents.

The vote for the Speaker of the House will take place this afternoon at 1:30.

Premier Dwight Ball expects more than one person will be nominated.
If it does go to a vote, it will be the third time it has done so. The position is open to all 39 members.

A judicial recount, set to begin on June 19th, will establish the final member of the House of Assembly. The NDP’s Jordan Brown defeated Liberal Incumbent Graham Letto by just five votes.

The Speech From the Throne is set for 2:00 p.m. just two months after the Lieutenant Governor originally set the course for the session ahead.
Premier Dwight Ball jokes today’s Speech won’t deviate too far from the original speech. He says it’ll be a shorter, more condensed version.
The Premier says he’s looking forward to getting the budget passed.
