The first session of the 49th General Assembly is in the books and all parties are stressing the importance of collaboration under a minority government.
Lieutenant Governor, Judy Foote delivered her Speech from the Throne to open the first session—a much shorter speech than the one delivered prior to the budget.
n her speech, Foote says government received a mandate to rise above, to collaborate, and to do things differently.
She says our province will advance even further when members of the House set aside partisan politics with a solid resolve to work together for the good of constituents and the province.
Following the Speech from the Throne, all three party leaders—Premier Dwight Ball, Ches Crosbie and Alison Coffin—reiterated their desire to work together.
Ball says it’s clear no one wants to go back to the polls anytime soon.
Perry Trimper has been acclaimed as House Speaker, while Scott Reid has been named Deputy House Speaker.
Independent MHA Paul Lane has been named Deputy Chair of Committees, a move Premier Ball says sends a message to people that all 40 members are willing to work together.
The budget debate begins tomorrow.
Back in the House of Assembly this morning where 39 new members are now being sworn-in, beginning with Brian Warr.
