Newfoundland and Labrador is often celebrated for its whales, moose and seals, but the lesser-known creepy crawlies seldom get recognized – until now.
Boulder Publications is out with a field guide of the province’s insects titled “Stouts, Millers and Forky-Tails.”
The book is written by entomologists Tom Chapman, Peggy Dixon and Carolyn Parsons and retired Chief Veterinary Officer for the province, Dr. Hugh Whitney.
Whitney says he focused his work on the bugs that few people want to talk about, including ticks, mites, bedbugs, and fleas that can spread disease.
Whitney says while butterflies, dragonflies, and bees get a lot of attention, his favourite insect is the stink bug.
He says the name repels people from them, but he finds them fascinating as the immature bugs are actually quite beautiful.
