A controversial development on Whiteway Street in St. John’s has been shot down by city council.
The proposal was to build three two-storey townhouses in place of the current house at 22 Whiteway Street.
The development was met with heavy criticism from area residents, despite being in line with city regulations.
Residents gave several reasons as to why they were against the proposal, including that the development would not be in line with the historic characteristics of the neighbourhood.
As well, a petition of over 160 signatures was brought to council, signed by residents opposed to the development.

Mayor Danny Breen voted against the application, which he says didn’t seem to have much of a rhyme or reason to it.
He says the proposal was just to get rid of the house that is currently there, and that is not a good enough reason to move ahead with the plan.
