A local mother, whose own daughter came out in high school, has started a new Facebook group that’s all about the hugs.
Cindy Grant will be offering free hugs at the St. John’s Pride Parade on July 14.
Her hope is that her Free Mom/Dad Hugs NL Facebook campaign will show members of the LBGTQ community that they are loved and accepted.
Grant was inspired by her daughter, Jade.
Grant says she was very supportive when her daughter came out and can’t imagine anyone who could reject their child because they are gay.
Grant says this is all about letting members of the LBGTQ that have been rejected by their own families for coming out, that they really do matter and we really do care.
She urges anyone who wants to get involved, to like the page and keep an eye out for updates. She is also open to corporate support—not to make a profit, but to help with signs and supplies.
The City of Mount Pearl has already come on board with a $500 donation for t-shirts for the group.
