Two Newfoundlanders have been announced as humanitarian award recipients by the Canadian Red Cross.
Ann Whelan, founder and CEO of Seafair Group, will receive the 2019 Humanitarian Award for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Whelan’s group of companies have worked with hundreds of the province’s most vulnerable people, including seniors, children, youth and those with various disabilities. She has also supported a multitude of charitable organizations throughout the province.
Matthew Raske, a student at Memorial University will receive the 2019 Young Humanitarian Award for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Raske has been raising awareness about important issues such as human trafficking and injustices against Indigenous peoples since he was in high school. He is also a founding member of the St. John’s Youth Social Justice Society.
The awards will be presented to Whelan and Raske at the Power of Humanity fundraising awards dinner at the Delta in St. John’s on November 21.
