A local business swept the People’s Choice Awards at a recent grilled cheese competition in Ontario.
Oh My Cheeses from the St. John’s Farmers Market and Port Rexton was the only competitor from outside Ontario and was the first ever to be selected for all three of the People’s Choice awards: Best tasting category, gourmet category and the most unique category.
Owner Lisa Leshane says to be the only team from this province was cool enough, but they were also the smallest team—consisting of just her and Kim Hewlett.
The pair prepped a lot before they left the island and managed to make 350 sandwiches in one day—150 more than their old daily record.
She says the sandwich, called “The Violet”, which features Newfoundland blueberries, was a huge hit. She says they were trying to showcase flavours of Newfoundland.
The Violet includes local blueberry apple jam, old cheddar, fresh basil and finished with a balsamic glaze.
