A St. John’s company has been charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act as the result of a workplace incident that resulted in the partial amputation of a worker’s foot.
The incident occurred at a wharf construction site in St. John’s in October of 2017.
RJG Construction Limited is charged with nine violations under the act, for allegedly failing to:
- Provide and maintain a safe workplace;
- Provide information, instruction, training and supervision necessary;
- Ensure workers and particularly supervisors are made familiar with the hazards;
- Ensure that safe work procedures are followed;
- Ensure that safe work procedures promote the safe interaction of workers and their work environment;
- Ensure that the use of a mobile crane met the requirements of CSA Z150;
- Ensure the OHS Program included written safe work procedures appropriate to the hazards and work activity;
- Implement its OHS Program; and
- Ensure that material was placed in a secure manner that did not constitute a hazard to a worker.
The first provincial court appearance is set for July 16.
