A standing ovation in the House of Assembly today for Rod Deon, a decorated veteran of WWII who recently came back from Normandy where he participated in ceremonies marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
NDP Leader Allison Coffin stood in the House to recognize Deon as one of the surviving veterans of the storming of the beaches of Normandy, and an “outstanding community volunteer.”
Deon is a dedicated volunteer with the Royal Canadian Legion and many recognize him for his efforts selling poppies every year—a campaign he’s been involved in for more than half a century.
Deon was born in Nova Scotia in 1921, and is a celebrated artist. He was honoured with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012 for a wooden sculpture he created after the Queen’s coronation in 1953.
