June 21st marks the first day of summer, the summer solstice, but it also marks National Indigenous Peoples Day.
To mark the day, First Light NL held a sunrise ceremony this morning at 6:00. The ceremony included song, prayer and smudging in Bannerman Park and had a large turnout.

Jenelle Duval, Events Coordinator for First Light NL, says large numbers have been turning out for the past few years.
She says they decided to come together to acknowledge the significance of National Indigenous Day.
Celebrations will continue from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Techniplex with vendors, food and more.
