One of the province’s most iconic businesses is celebrating a major milestone today. Cohen’s Home Furnishings is celebrating 100 years in the community.
Cohen’s Home Furnishings was founded in 1919 by Simon Cohen in the town of Windsor, and stayed within the Cohen family until the 1980s, when it was sold to the Bell family, who still operate it to this day.
Boyd Cohen is the grandson of Simon Cohen. He headed the family business until he sold it in the 1980s.
Cohen says that Confederation with Canada played a huge role in the success of his business. Joining confederation gave Newfoundlanders who served overseas certain rights to farm, farmland, homes, and furniture. Cohen capitalized on this and geared his business towards furniture.
Cohen says that every day on the job was memorable, and could be called one of his favourites.
He says the companionship with customers and staff always carried him through.
