A plumbing problem has forced the interpretation centre at the Colony of Avalon Archaeology Site in Ferryland to temporarily close its doors to visitors.
The facility, which was first opened in 1996, was renovated over the off season. The building and site just opened for the summer last week.
The Colony of Avalon is an active archaeology site. The 17th century English Colony was founded by the first Lord Baltimore, George Calvert.
Officials had just completed setting up for the opening on Thursday, when water started leaking into the lobby, flooding out the area. Workers have already made some progress on repairs and are hoping the exhibit space can be reopened within the next week.
The Colony has faced some financial struggles in the past so having to pay for unexpected repairs has placed a burden on them, says Executive Director, Colleen Crane.
They’re planning to set up a Go Fund Me page in the coming days to cover the supplies and labour.
The Southern Shore tourist attraction sees at least 10,000 guests every summer.
