The mayor of Mount Pearl says it could be a difficult few days for traffic flow in the area when the new Costco opens.
The Costco on Stavanger closes tomorrow with the Galway location opening on Thursday.
For now, there are only two entrances to Galway as the third, Southlands Boulevard, has yet to open.
Mayor Dave Aker says you cannot design your infrastructure for a short-term situation, such as this weekend when traffic to and from Costco is expected to be high. People coming in from the TCH have the option of using that entrance, but Dave Aker hopes others will consider that option as well, even though it may mean a longer distance.
He is concerned about traffic through the Ruth Avenue roundabout backing up not only on Ruth and Old Placentia Road but on the downtown arterial as well.
He fears that if cars start slowing on Pitts Memorial, where the speed limit is 100 km/h, it could lead to a dangerous situation.
Roundabouts Not Difficult to Navigate, and There Are Alternatives says Williams

Some concerns have been expressed about the roundabouts leading into Galway from Mount Pearl, especially for those whose trips into metro are infrequent.
Danny Williams says they’re easy to navigate, and it’s only a matter of getting used to them. He says people driving in over the highway can enter through Galway industrial and avoid the roundabouts altogether, while those entering Galway through Mount Pearl have been using them for some time now.
A recent VOCM question of the day showed only 24 per cent of respondents had a problem with roundabouts, while 37 per cent either way were fine or indifferent to driving through them.
