A Spaniard’s Bay mom is beaming with pride after learning her 15-year-old son jumped into action to help a badly injured young man at a local swimming hole.
The 13-year-old suffered a serious gash in his leg while swimming in the Gorge, a popular swimming hole, yesterday. 15-year-old Isaac Wilson, a member of the Cadets, was trained in first aid. His mom says he saw the situation, and immediately took action.
She says he called 911, got a t-shirt to wrap the wound which was bleeding significantly, got someone to sit and talk with the injured boy to keep him calm, and sent out another friend to meet with paramedics.
The injured boy was airlifted out of the area last night. He’s reported to be doing fine despite his ordeal. Wilson is offering her congratulations and thanks to all those involved in the effort.
The RCMP says the boy was treated in St. John’s and has since been released.

One Good Turn Deserves Another
Isaac wasn’t the only one to help.
15-year-old Zackery Anthony of Spaniard’s Bay was also on the scene to lend his support, never knowing that he was returning an act of kindness shown earlier in the week.
A woman had come to the aid of one of Zackery’s friends earlier this week, when the boy’s bike struck a bump in the pavement and he flipped over his handle bars. The woman, a nurse, attended to the young man’s injuries until an ambulance arrived.
Zackery had an opportunity to return the favour when he assisted the 13-year-old injured in the Gorge in Spaniard’s Bay yesterday. Zackery, who is 6 feet 2 inches tall, helped to carry the boy out and provided the t-shirt that helped to stem the bleeding from his wound.
Little did he know that the boy he was helping, was the son of the nurse who lended assistance to his friend a day earlier.
Earlier Story
A crew from the Spaniard’s Bay Volunteer Fire Department had to scale a waterfall to get to an injured 13-year-old during a rescue operation yesterday evening.
There were some tense moments as a search and rescue helicopter had to be called in to rescue the teen who had become stranded at a popular swimming hole known as The Gorge.
Lieutenant Gary Gosse says that the 13-year-old boy became stranded in a very precarious position. He describes the area as being like a horseshoe with 100 feet of cliffs all the way around.
The boy suffered a nasty gash on his leg that was so bad it left him unable to put any pressure on it at all.
Because of this and where the boy was located, it was decided to get the boy by helicopter and airlift him to St. John’s for treatment.
