The town of Grand Bank’s downtown core is on the National Trust’s top 10 list of endangered places across Canada.
The area was placed on the list due to a lack of maintenance and upkeep on some of the downtown’s historic buildings that were centrepieces to the town’s once bustling codfish industry.
Speaking on VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, Mayor Rex Matthews said funding on a provincial or federal level is off the table, and the town just doesn’t have the money for the upkeep.
He says they have to be careful of how they structure their tax system because of the aging population, and they don’t have the luxury of extra money to fix the buildings.
