The new Costco opened its doors today in Galway, replacing the longstanding location on Stavanger Drive in the East End of St. John’s.
The new store is the biggest Costco location in the country, with 1,000 parking spaces and 24 gas pumps.
But some are concerned two roundabouts leading into the new location in Galway will cause problems for motorists as they learn to navigate the area.
Jim Brazil of Safety Services NL says the key to a roundabout is to yield to those already in the intersection, to watch the arrows and signage, and to always take your time.
He took VOCM’s Renell LeGrow on a ride through the roundabouts:
Brazil says the posted speed limit in a roundabout is usually low, however he says some drivers will enter the intersection at high rates of speed.
Brazil says there are now 14 roundabouts in the metro region, but some drivers are still working to get the hang of them. He says most times his students have not used them, and don’t know how.
