A team from Mount Pearl Senior High came in 10th in the world at the recent MATE International ROV Competition in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The MATE competition challenges students in K-12, and post-secondary schools to design and build remote operated vehicles to tackle missions modeled after real-life scenarios.
The Robotics teacher at Mount Pearl Senior High, Paul King says he’s very proud of what his students accomplished, coming in first place for their technical report and 2nd in their marketing display.
Cameron Kinsella was the pilot and CEO of the student project. They were asked to design an ROV for some specific tasks including identifying cannons in the water and replacing trash racks.
Megan King was the team’s COO. She says they worked on the project the entire year. She says it took a lot of time, effort and planning. It also took a lot of trouble shooting at the Marine Institute and the pool at their school to get it where they wanted it to be.
45 teams from 19 different countries competed in the international event.
