Two Harbour Grace families are hoping that the culprits responsible will do the right thing and return some antique guns recently stolen from the Conception Bay Museum.
The guns were on loan to the museum by the Godden and Oke families of Harbour Grace.
The Goddens loaned the museum two dueling pistols, dating between 1813 and 1860, and a Colt revolver manufactured in 1855.
Ed Oke’s grandfather loaned the WWI-era flare gun to aviators Captain Erroll Boyd and Lieutenant Harry Connor as they were set to embark on a flight from Canada to England in 1930.
Oke says the flare gun means a lot to the family. It once belonged to his grandfather, Edward Oke, who was involved in the construction and development of the Harbour Grace airstrip.
He was a veteran of the First World War and offered the flare gun to the aviators as a safety measure. They returned it, engraved, as a token of appreciation for his gesture.
He’s encouraging anyone who may know where it is to do the right thing and return it. He tells VOCM News if the gun is returned, they will happily hand it back to the museum for display.
