The waters around Newfoundland are teeming with whales as the massive creatures move north to feed.
The capelin and herring have brought various species inshore putting on a spectacular show for residents and tourists alike.
DFO whale researcher Dr. Jack Lawson says one of the best places to see whales is in St. Vincent’s, where a pod of feeding humpbacks have come right up to the beach.
He says the beach has a steep slope, allowing whales to corral schools of fish against what is essentially a wall of sand.
In the meantime, whales have been reported in various areas of the island including a pod of fin whales caught on camera by VOCM’s Ben Murphy while flying over Conception Bay on Saturday, as shown above.
A pod of sperm whales have also been seen in Trinity Bay.
