Search and Rescue crews were put to the test after a distress call was issued from a remote area near Brigus, yesterday afternoon.
Bay Roberts RCMP say a 58-year-old man and 54-year-old woman were hiking near the Brigus Lighthouse, when the woman fell unconscious.
Members of the Avalon North Wolverines Search and Rescue, RCMP and paramedics responded, but ran into difficulty due to rough terrain.
Wolverines Search and Rescue says the woman was unreachable by Argo—a specialized all-terrain vehicle—and recovering the woman would be too dangerous by foot.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre dispatched a helicopter, which rescued the woman, airlifting her to Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, where she remains in stable condition.
