Recent reports show that over a two-year period, Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials removed 900 improperly-labelled food products destined for Canadian markets from China.
Among the allergens and contaminants identified by officials were glass and metal.
Catherine Keske, an expert in agricultural and resource economics and an adjunct professor at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus, says food traceability is an important issue.
She says labeling is important. If it’s produced in Canada, it’s easier to trace it to its source than a product coming from a developing country.
Keske says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency does a very good job, but items still get through.
