A GoFundMe campaign to fulfill an Ontario man’s dying wish to visit Newfoundland has surpassed its goal.
Mike Sloan was hoping to raise $10,000 to fund his funeral and end of life trip to this province. His campaign reached its target within 36 hours and has since climbed to over $12,000.
Sloan received his diagnosis nine months ago. He considers himself lucky because 50 per cent of people with this type of thyroid cancer don’t live past six months.
Sloan plans on visiting in August, and while he doesn’t know a soul in Newfoundland, he doesn’t expect that to be a problem.
He says he’s sure it’ll all work out given what’s happened over the past few months of his life, how lucky he’s been and the kindness of people. He’s sure that he’ll get there and it’ll all work out. He’s hoping to check out some bars in downtown St. John’s and do some whale watching.
Sloan says he chose Newfoundland because he’s heard from friends that the people here are exceptionally friendly and the way of life is laid back and relaxed.
