St. John’s has established a four-person panel to look at electoral reform at city hall.
The formation of the panel comes as the result of the Citizens’ Assembly for Stronger Elections report, released last year.
Council determined that certain areas of the report would need further analysis, and decided establishing the panel would be the best way to go.
The areas the group will be looking at are broken up into five categories: Campaign Finance, Council Structure, Electoral Systems, Voting Method, and Enfranchisement.

Councilor Maggie Burton says she wants to see recommendations from the committee implemented before the next election. She says she does not intend on the next election taking place without the conversation being finished.
Burton says the issue of corporate donations on the campaign trail will be looked at. She says whether or not corporations can donate to individual councilors will be discussed. She says that is an issue that has garnered a lot of public attention.
