The Department of Justice is cautioning the public of a fraudulent email circulating, that asks potential victims to send money for traffic fines.
The email, which appears to be from “traffic enforcement,” says the recipient received a ticket for speeding that was caught on a traffic camera.
It then requests the recipient pay the fine to avoid deduction of a demerit point. It continues to say that if the fine is not paid immediately, there will be a 10 per cent daily increase in payment. There is a tap button included in the email.
The Department of Justice says the Fines Administration Division does not email notices related to tickets or fines. Instead, letters are mailed upon conviction.
There are no discounts for early payment, and no rise in cost other than a one-time late fee when warranted.
Anyone who receives this email should immediately report it to the Anti-Fraud Centre.
