There’s been a delay in sentencing for a 40-year-old St. John’s woman found guilty of criminal charges after her two dogs got loose and killed a pet cat.
Crystal Smith testified that last August 4th, she was feeling unwell and instead of walking her dogs, she took them to a tennis court near Mundy Pond and let them off leash to run. Smith said she checked her phone, and when she looked up the dogs were gone.
Both dogs are American Staffordshire Terrier mixes. They found their way into a backyard on Wishingwell Place, mauling a pet cat to death.
Smith was convicted in May of two counts under the Animal Health and Protection Act, and the case went to sentencing in June. However the judge wanted to hear from a dog trainer who worked with the animals.
When court was called yesterday, the trainer was not present, and the judge again set the case over to August.
