NDP Leader Alison Coffin says cuts do need to happen for the province to reach a fiscal surplus, but there is potential for cost savings in the next couple of years due to the completion of some big projects.
Coffin says in the 2019 budget we had an enormous amount of money going towards Muskrat Falls, and we’re subsidizing that.
The province has tucked $111-million away for the Equinor project, and that money is just sitting there.
Those are just two expenditures that will not be happening in a couple of years.
Coffin says there are a number of pockets of money ,including Nalcor, returning profits back to the province.
She says we can add up those pockets of money, and we can capture somewhere between $500-million and $600-million right away.
Coffin says we can grab $500-million by essentially doing nothing. She says they can do that just by maintaining revenues exactly as we are and continuing spending.
