If you’re planning on having an outdoor fire, be careful.
The Forest Fire Index shows five areas across the province in the “extreme” fire hazard category.
Two regions are on the Northern Peninsula north of Rocky Harbour, and there are more in central Newfoundland including the stretch from Glovertown to Gander and to Carmanville. The Bay du Nord area of eastern NL is also impacted as are southern areas as far as Burgeo.
The extreme designation means the risk of fire is high.
New fires will start very easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts. Many forest-related activities will be banned or restricted. This includes closing access to forested areas, cancelling burn permits, restricting industrial activities, and prohibiting open fires and campfires.
The Botwood Fire Department has already put out a warning for residents to be careful with any outdoor fires.
