A number of circumstances has resulted in Newfoundland and Labrador’s very first provincial Historic Site to lie in what many feel is a sad state of disrepair, empty and overgrown.
The Quidi Vidi Battery, which opened in 1967 and was formally recognized in 1974, closed to the public in 2011.
It sits on an archaeological site overlooking Quidi Vidi Harbour dating back to 1812, and was reconstructed by the province in the 1960s.
The provincial government says it was closed eight years ago due to a lack of available parking and accessibility issues.
The province says there is no written agreement with neighbouring residents for access – private property signs line the only road leading to the site. There are no washroom facilities and no running water.
Government provided no indication that any efforts are being made to have the site reopened.
