Funding was announced for women in skilled trades and non-profit organization, Office to Advance Women Apprentices, this morning.
Women in trades in the province are feeling optimistic after government announced $1.1-million to the Office to Advance Women Apprentices (OAWA).
The non-profit organization helps secure employment opportunities for women in the skilled trades in this province, and is run out of the Carpenters Millwright College in Paradise.
Executive director Karen Walsh says the money will help over 200 women in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick prepare and secure employment in their trade.
About 10 years ago when this organization began, women were underrepresented—only making up five per cent of tradespeople. Now they represent around 13 per cent. Walsh says that is still a low number.
Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, made the announcement this morning.
