Coast Guard Environmental Response is assessing the wrecks of three whaling ships in Conception Harbour after a sheen was noticed on the water earlier this month.
A containment boom was put in place after the sheen was first discovered July 15th. That sheen has been traced to the ships.
The three ships were abandoned in the 1960s and sank close to 50 years ago.
Two of the wrecks are completely immersed. All three are rusted, unstable and deteriorating and underwater work will be restricted due to safety concerns.
