More details have come to light on a tragedy that unfolded in the Labrador community of Rigolet yesterday evening.
A group of two adults and two young people were heading out to a cabin when their 18-foot aluminum boat struck a rock about 30 kilometres outside of the town.
RCMP were called in, and an extensive search was launched with the help of local rescue teams. A number of boats and aircraft were deployed to the area by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
Just before 7:00, Rigolet Ground Search and Rescue found two young girls sitting on the overturned boat, and brought them to a nearby cabin to warm up.
The body of a 34-year-old man was recovered two hours later. The body of a 27-year-old woman was located by a Cormorant helicopter around 5:00 this morning, and was recovered by a Coast Guard Vessel.
Meanwhile, residents of Rigolet are reeling.
Yesterday’s tragedy brings to four the number of residents who have passed away in the tight-knit community in the last two weeks.
Community leader Richard Riche passed away two weeks ago, while the community nurse passed last week.
A senior community spokesperson says residents are in shock as they try to process the latest loss.
The president of the Nunatsiavut Government says he’s saddened by the tragic accident.
President Johannes Lampe is offering his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
He also offered his thanks to those who responded to the tragedy, and rescued the two children who were found clinging to the capsized boat.
He says were it not for the prompt action of rescuers, the results could have been far worse.
