The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has successfully removed seven sunken vessels from the harbour in St. Bride’s.
It’s all part of the federal government’s Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels Removal Program.
Joe McGrath of DFO says while St. Bride’s has seen its fair share of rough seas and hurricane conditions in the past, most of the vessels recovered were simply just abandoned over time.
He says as in most cases, over time, owners are either unable to take care of the vessels, they leave the fishery or pass away, and there’s no one left to take care of them.
