A family still grieving after their pet dog was shot and killed by a neighbour has started a petition demanding justice.
Last Sunday night Bandit-a four-year-old Malamute broke free from his tether in Red Head Cove, near Bay de Verde, and wandered onto a neighbouring property where he was shot dead at close range.
The owner of the property said he thought he was firing at a coyote that killed his ducks. Since then the RCMP investigated and no charges will be laid.
That’s not good enough for Sarah Mitchell, whose boyfriend owned Bandit. She has started a petition demanding justice, and a second look at the law.
Mitchell says the answer they’ve received from Fisheries and Wildlife is always the same: no one is allowed to fire a weapon with 300 metres of a dwelling.
She wants to know why the law does not seem to apply for Bandit.
