A Quebec woman is lucky to be alive following a harrowing encounter with a black bear in Labrador earlier this week.
The woman is recovering in hospital after a bear grabbed her by the upper leg. She was eventually airlifted out of the remote region and was treated in hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
The woman was part of a group of experienced paddlers who have been participating in regular canoe trips in the wilderness for over three decades.
VOCM News reached one of the party members who declined an interview due to emotional exhaustion.
Those familiar with the incident tell VOCM News that the bear involved could not be frightened away and bit the woman, leaving her with a gash.
The incident occurred at a lake about 140 km south of Goose Bay.
Wildlife Officials Issue Tips on Bear Encounters
In this instance, the bear had reportedly approached the campers, and could not be frightened off.
Wildlife officials say black bears should never be approached, and if you do encounter a bear, take note of its behaviour.
They say if the bear did not see you, back away quietly and leave the area. Try to stay downwind and keep an eye on the bear.
Never get between a bear and her cubs.
If the bear has seen or smelled you, remain calm, give the animal plenty of room, back away and never run
If you must speak, do so calmly and firmly and avoid direct eye contact with the bear.
