The Pharmacists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is raising the alarm after the Trump Administration indicated it will allow Americans to legally and safely import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada.
Executive director Jennifer Collingwood says Canadians are already facing drug shortages and things would only worsen with huge numbers of Americans coming across the border to purchase drugs in significant quantities.
Collingwood says there are also questions about how American demand could affect a national Pharmacare program.
She says some pharmacies are already experiencing shortages of more than a thousand medications that are stocked and manufactured for Canadians, not Canadians and Americans.
