The East Coast Trail Association is wading into the Ragged Beach controversy in Witless Bay.
This week residents confronted a contractor hired by the town. An excavator was working on a site at the bottom of Gallows Cove Road constructing what to many people appeared to be a road.
The Town of Witless Bay indicated that the contractor was shoring up the area against erosion for safety reason.

Locals don’t buy that. They’re concerned about possible development of the site which includes a popular hiking trail.
The East Coast Trail says it was not consulted or informed of council’s plans. It says it is assessing the situation and the impact on the trail and will decide next steps from what it calls “an informed base.”
East Coast Trail, Ragged Cove Beach on ecological seabird reserve being turned into a road. It's a crime scene. Totally illegal action by Witless Bay town council and NL Gov does nothing to protect stop it. Why are they letting this happen? @DwightBallNL @ChesCrosbie pic.twitter.com/ae5glEL7dW
