For the first time in 85 years, a game of Cricket was played in Harbour Grace over the weekend.
Many years ago, cricket was a big sport in Harbour Grace and the whole Conception Bay North area with teams in Carbonear, Bay Roberts, Brigus and elsewhere that would play regularly.
David Liverman of Cricket NL says they thought it was a good idea to recognize the rich history by bringing a couple of teams out for a game.
Liverman says cricket is beginning to see a resurgence after almost dying out. He says it lasted longer in St. John’s than Harbour Grace, where it died by the end of the 19th century. For many years, there was nothing until they started Cricket NL nine years ago. At the time there were 30 players, now there are 230.
Liverman says that is thanks to, in bulk, new Canadians.
He says the majority of their members are new Canadians who started as international students. About half are finished their degrees and are living and working in the province, a reflection of how Newfoundland and Labrador is changing into a more diverse society.
A big thank you to Cricket Newfoundland & Labrador for coming to our community and (re)introducing us to this wonderful sport! We hope to see you again in the future.
