Cleaning up lakes and ponds around the Avalon has become a pass time for two men in St. John’s but the duo are not just picking up pieces of garbage.
Eugene Hynes and Jason Brushett have been towing their kayaks and diving gear to different locations around the Avalon to clean up.
During the dives they find jewelry, pieces of metal and of course, trash and recyclables. The men’s weekends are usually blocked off with dives, weather permitting, and after they post photos of their treasure on their Facebook page, Avalon Pond Cleanups.
Hynes and Brushett are co-workers so they figure out the times and places as they go along.
The reason they do it, Hynes says, is for the future.
He says if they don’t take the initiative right now to clean it up, the areas will only get worse and will not be pleasant for future generations.
