A man spent the day in hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after a fire in Twillingate on the weekend. The kitchen fire was contained to one unit of a small apartment building on Clearview Drive. It broke out around 6:30 in the morning.
The Canadian Red Cross says the man, who is now staying with relatives, has been helped by Canadian Red Cross volunteers from Gander with emergency purchases like food and clothing.
It was the second fire on North Twillingate Island in Notre Dame Bay in less than a week.
A blaze last Tuesday on Park Road damaged a bungalow with a basement apartment, displacing the owner and three tenants including a woman and two children. They were also helped by the Red Cross.
