The Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council held its tenth annual Multicultural Festival at Bowring Park on Saturday.
There were over 20 vendors and performers from all over the world in attendance.
Winifred Ohwoka was one of the vendors. She and her family are from Nigeria originally but they came to Newfoundland three years ago from Norway.
Her husband is doing his PhD at Memorial University. Winifred makes clothing and other products from brightly-patterned Nigerian cotton.
Her stall was very popular at the festival. She says that St. John’s is just like it was described on the internet. She is happy that they chose to come here.
Ohwoka says that you can take your time in the morning and when you go out, you know that you have friendly neighbors, people say hello to you and they want to help you.
She says they plan on staying in this province when her husband finishes his PhD because Newfoundland seems like home to her. It is a good place to raise up children.
