A number of activities are underway today to get Hibernia back up and running following last month’s oil spill.
Some 12,000 litres of oil spilled out into the ocean from the platform on July 17th.
Hibernia Management and Development Company says their return to production plan is designed to minimize potential impacts on the environment.
The pipe from where the original discharge occurred may contain a residual oil and water mixture, and there is a possibility that mixture could be released once the valves are opened.
HMDC says they have taken all possible measures to prevent an additional discharge, with multiple spill response mitigations in place to make sure any residual oil and water mixture in the pipe is captured.
Measures will include vessels equipped with spill response equipment and detector radar on location along with aerial, satellite and vessel surveillance, third party wildlife observers and more.
VOCM News is tracking the story and will provide updates as they become available.
